Dear Governor Daniels,

I think reading the text of your speech made me pissier and more partisan than I was last night. Let’s look at why.

Those punished most by the wrong turns of the last three years are those unemployed or underemployed tonight, and those so discouraged that they have abandoned the search for work altogether.

Face it. You and this new GOP are not at all sympathetic. If you were, you wouldn’t have raised holy hell every time unemployment insurance needed to be extended. It took one of my former coworkers who was laid off 2 years before he found comparable employment. His wife was also unemployed. They burned through their savings and their 401Ks. Thankfully, she found employment first. They were able to keep their apartment on her income and his unemployment insurance. There are millions of stories like theirs. Don’t pretend you feel bad for them when you and yours called (and continue to call) them “parasites.”

We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves.

Wow, on our planet, the sky is blue. The reality is that we are becoming a nation of have and have nots. The gap between rich and poor is growing wider. The soon to haves are dwindling. Some don’t even dream about having but will settle for surviving.

So 2012 is a year of true opportunity, maybe our last, to restore an America of hope and upward mobility, and greater equality.

And, of course, you believe this new GOP will get us there. Sorry, but I don’t want to go back to the days of lax regulation that tanked our economy. Predatory lenders, lenders who would give my dog a mortgage, and no one to stop it. Yeah, we all saw how that ended. Please. No encores.

The better course is to stop sending the wealthy benefits they do not need, and stop providing them so many tax preferences that distort our economy and do little or nothing to foster growth.

Wanna start with Mitt Romney and his capital gains-pretending-to-be-income tax? Get the ball rolling, and you’ll be accused of being Liberal. Oh the horror!

In word and deed, the President and his allies tell us that we just cannot handle ourselves in this complex, perilous world without their benevolent protection. Left to ourselves, we might pick the wrong health insurance, the wrong mortgage, the wrong school for our kids; why, unless they stop us, we might pick the wrong light bulb!

Oh picking the wrong health insurance means you actually have access to it. Go back to the way it was, and many of us with pre-existing conditions would be SOL. Wrong mortgage? Like interest-only mortgages people were conned into believing they could afford? Nothing wrong with regulators (gasp!) actually making sure lenders aren’t selling a lifestyle they can’t pay for.

Republicans will speak for those who believe in the dignity and capacity of the individual citizen; who believe that government is meant to serve the people rather than supervise them;

I guess that would be most Americans. However, bad behavior should be supervised (see predatory lending above).

I’m tired of this crap. Really, really tired. I want the country to move forward. Backwards is not an option.

Sincerely (because I ain’t feeling the love tonight),
Spinny

This Daniels is the fellow who presided over the Bush tax cuts back in 2002 -2003, as well as making the decisions to keep Bush’s egotistical wars in Iraq and Afghanistan off budget and unpaid for. The Republicans seem to think he is a nice guy, qualified to be in political office, even the Presidency. He is, as is pretty much the whole raft of Republicans in office these days, whether in Washington or in the State capitols, he is, how do I put this politely… oh, yeah, he’s political scum who makes pond scum and snail crap look good.

Like I said in my analysis….I got more useful info by watching flies f*ck!

Was this taken from the “Republican response” to the State of the Union? Because it sounds like Governor Daniels is trying to run for President, not run his state. If so, he should sack-up and get into the race. Otherwise, he should shut the fuck up and do HIS job better. I think he has enough of his own responsibility for the mess.

The “wrong turns of the last 3 years”??? Is this fuckwad for real? Does he actually think 3 years, curiously starting with the day Obama was sworn in and not one minute before, is entirely responsible for the current state of affairs? This is the kind of complete (and usually intentional) misunderstanding of how things work I’ve come to expect from American politicians, particularly of the Republican persuasion.

Things just DO NOT get this bad in the space of 3 years. It takes DECADES of crappy policies for things to get this bad. To pretend otherwise requires incomprehensible stupidity from both the speaker and all those in agreement with him. Such is the nature of partisan politics.

Yes it was the Republican “response.” He said the disaster wasn’t his fault, but his policies have kept things from getting better. It’s their same song. “The world sucks because Obama is president. Whatever he supports, we reject.”

      • Sedate Me

It’s one thing to say his policies aren’t working, or have made things worse. It’s wrong, but it’s fair comment. But what they are doing is trying to blame Obama 100% for something that:

        1) took decades to happen.
        2) the disaster struck before he got there.
        3) 3 years of perfection wasn’t gonna fix a problem this monumental.

If they don’t look back and see that both parties contributed roughly equally to this mess and why, then the mistakes are only going to be repeated…soon and with much greater fallout.

  • Hansi

Yep…some of the republicans wanna lead us forward right into the 19th century

Regardless of the party, no opposition party should have a response following the SOTU. None …. well, unless the party buys the time at the Super Bowl 30-second commercial rate on every station.

    • Spinny Liberal

I wondered about that. It’s weird that there is a formal “response.” I agree – there shouldn’t be, whoever is President. Individuals can put their two cents in, but I think it’s strange to have someone speaking for the entire party.

Yeah, I gagged when I heard this blather. What a TOOL of the R’s. The Repubs seem to believe that economic history began four years ago. And fools are buying that nonsense.
