I think reading the text of your speech made me pissier and more partisan than I was last night. Let’s look at why.
Those punished most by the wrong turns of the last three years are those unemployed or underemployed tonight, and those so discouraged that they have abandoned the search for work altogether.
Face it. You and this new GOP are not at all sympathetic. If you were, you wouldn’t have raised holy hell every time unemployment insurance needed to be extended. It took one of my former coworkers who was laid off 2 years before he found comparable employment. His wife was also unemployed. They burned through their savings and their 401Ks. Thankfully, she found employment first. They were able to keep their apartment on her income and his unemployment insurance. There are millions of stories like theirs. Don’t pretend you feel bad for them when you and yours called (and continue to call) them “parasites.”
We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves.
Wow, on our planet, the sky is blue. The reality is that we are becoming a nation of have and have nots. The gap between rich and poor is growing wider. The soon to haves are dwindling. Some don’t even dream about having but will settle for surviving.
So 2012 is a year of true opportunity, maybe our last, to restore an America of hope and upward mobility, and greater equality.
And, of course, you believe this new GOP will get us there. Sorry, but I don’t want to go back to the days of lax regulation that tanked our economy. Predatory lenders, lenders who would give my dog a mortgage, and no one to stop it. Yeah, we all saw how that ended. Please. No encores.
The better course is to stop sending the wealthy benefits they do not need, and stop providing them so many tax preferences that distort our economy and do little or nothing to foster growth.
Wanna start with Mitt Romney and his capital gains-pretending-to-be-income tax? Get the ball rolling, and you’ll be accused of being Liberal. Oh the horror!
In word and deed, the President and his allies tell us that we just cannot handle ourselves in this complex, perilous world without their benevolent protection. Left to ourselves, we might pick the wrong health insurance, the wrong mortgage, the wrong school for our kids; why, unless they stop us, we might pick the wrong light bulb!
Oh picking the wrong health insurance means you actually have access to it. Go back to the way it was, and many of us with pre-existing conditions would be SOL. Wrong mortgage? Like interest-only mortgages people were conned into believing they could afford? Nothing wrong with regulators (gasp!) actually making sure lenders aren’t selling a lifestyle they can’t pay for.
Republicans will speak for those who believe in the dignity and capacity of the individual citizen; who believe that government is meant to serve the people rather than supervise them;
I guess that would be most Americans. However, bad behavior should be supervised (see predatory lending above).
I’m tired of this crap. Really, really tired. I want the country to move forward. Backwards is not an option.
Sincerely (because I ain’t feeling the love tonight),
