Extra American

Today, we’re not just American. We’re “extra” American. Two stars are aligned. President Ronald Reagan would have turned 100 years old, today, Superbowl Sunday.

Ronald Reagan. Actor. Jelly Belly connoiseur. Republican. 40th President of the United States. He was instrumental in ending of the Cold War. And he’s one of the best orators of our time. I really don’t get the Conservatives’ godlike worship of him, though. He exploded the federal debt by cutting taxes and expanding the military. He was addicted to deficit spending. But you only “would have turned 100 years old” once, so I hope Conservatives are enjoying today.

His birthday falls on Superbowl Sunday this year. For Americans, the Big Game is sacred, right up there with Christmas. The two best teams of the season battle it out to be number one. Parties abound across the nation. Chips and dip, ice cold beer in the middle of winter, and extra chairs in the living room. The Superbowl has a little something for everyone. Some only watch it for the commercials, which at around $3M for 30 seconds better be pretty spectacular. They usually are. Others only watch the half time show. Again, because it’s the “big game,” it is usually over the top. Even those who don’t watch it are catered to. Almost every other network are showing marathons of their biggest shows. From Jerseylicious to Snapped. There’s a lot to choose from.

I usually watch the singing of the national anthem. That’s my favorite part. They show soldiers abroad live via satellite. It’s so patriotic. Christina Aguilera sang it this year and fumbled the lyrics. Yeah, that was bad. Totally ruined it for me, but oh well. It’s still a very American day.

Here’s one of my favorite performances of the national anthem at the Superbowl. 2008 Superbowl XLII: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots.

Jordin Sparks, American Idol winner, is the daughter of former defensive back, Phillippi Sparks, of the New York Giants. I think she was the Giants’ lucky charm. They won in a great game that year.
